As the game goes on each level is almost a matter of wading through some enemies to get to a camp, claiming that camp and getting it running, building an army to accompany your hero on his journey and then wiping out the enemy off the map while doing quests and getting look throughout. To begin with at least, it's very much an RPG/RTS with you selecting your own hero and it's class and levelling up while doing a couple of quests for people.

I put in about 10 hours and then it all went down hill from there. I put off playing this game for a bit but when I got round to it, I was quite pleasantly suprised. At under a fiver, you CANNOT go wrong, and I urge you to buy it.
SPELLFORCE 3 CLASSES FULL
I bought this game for £10 in a January sale, and when I saw the quality of it I felt guilty for not paying the full price and giving JoWood and the programmers their full dues. You could moan a bit about the item storage as you end up with lots of spells and items and not a very advanced way of dealing with them, or the lack of a decent `follow' option, but they certainly won't spoil the game for you.

The full 3D ability to zoom right in to `pseudo first-person' view for wandering around (if like me you preferred to wander that way), and then zoom out to a birds-eye view for selecting, attacking and suchlike was awesome. Then when you arrive at the Elven `towns' and look at the buildings (and the elves themselves) you just have to go, Wow! I'd regularly spend half an hour or more just wandering through the countryside looking at the grass waving, the fish swimming, the water rippling, and the sun/moon rising and setting - and my poor laptop wasn't even capable of running with the full graphic effects turned on. The graphics and control system are superb and blew me away. I'm currently playing the second expansion pack for this game, and have already bought Spellforce 2 - but it could be years before I get to play that!

The storyline and the side quests kept my interest all through the game. I'm not a hardcore gamer, just playing to distract myself every so often, but this game kept me interested for a whole year: which is how long it took me to finish it (although I played it for the enjoyment, not to finish it).
